Workshop

Rose Window
Every month we hold a workshop to make a rose window: a paper craft inspired by the round stained-glass rose windows of European cathedrals.
What is a rose window?
A paper craft that originated in Germany, inspired by the round stained-glass windows, or rose windows, of cathedrals and churches in Germany and across Europe.

How to make a rose window

First, choose your favorite colors from 34 colors of special rose window paper.
It depends on the design, but in the workshop most people choose three sheets.
Even three white sheets create depth, because the layers overlap.
Like color therapy, the colors people pick change with their mood, which is part of the fun.

Following the pattern, cut the rose window paper one sheet at a time.

Beginners start with patterns that have fewer, larger cuts. As you get used to it, you can level up and take on more difficult designs.
This one is by an intermediate-to-advanced maker, with very fine cuts.

Gently unfold the paper so it doesn't tear.

Layer three sheets, each cut with a different pattern…

…then fit them into the frame, and it's done!
This piece was made by a beginner who has joined a few times.
Held up to the light, it's as beautiful as stained glass.

This one, with a detailed pattern, is by an advanced maker.
The pastel colors glow with a soft, lovely light.
The three primary colors

This rose window makes use of the three primary colors of pigment:
cyan (C), magenta (M) and yellow (Y).

Here is the same rose window held up to the light.
Where the three primary colors overlap, orange, green, purple and even black appear.
If it's your first time, making one with the three primary colors is a fun way to see the difference between room light and backlight.
I still find this so fascinating that I keep comparing them again and again.

You can't tell how it will look while you're making it, so holding it up to the light at the end and seeing the colors appear is part of the fun.
Instructor: Yukimi Oyama

Rose window instructor for 6 years
As a highly sensitive person (HSP), everyday life was often overwhelming, until a chance encounter with rose windows. Captivated by their beauty, Yukimi took up the craft,
and rose windows became a form of self-expression and a source of calm in daily life.
Yukimi runs the workshop hoping participants can set their thoughts aside through making things, treasure the present moment, and share all kinds of feelings together.
